Ten Ways to Distribute a Press Release

When considering press releases - or other news, most people just think about sending it via email to reporters, or maybe simply putting it up on PR Newswire or PR Web etc. and then it is fire and forget. If that is all you are doing though, you are missing out on some other methods that could enhance the overall value of your news release.
Ultimately, many of these other areas are why our company likes to focus on Internet Marketing AND PR - because the two are so closely entwined in today’s marketplace.
- Via your website’s press or news section
- Newswire
- Web Form
- Social Media (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
- Social Bookmark Sites (Digg, Propeller, Delicious, etc.)
- Fax
- Phone
- Stunt, Courier, Gift

Marketwire was able to create a customized researched list of specific editors and reporters for us to target. It allowed us to make sure we wern’t wasting editors time and bringing topical content to them instead of the old “spray and pray” technique……coupled with Marketwire’s distribution to mainstream and trade media the campaigned worked out fantasticly!

These are excellent tips - so many people go the fire and forget route, as you mention, that they miss out on other hugely effective avenues.
I also use my company newsletter - I have a section in there for archived/latest press releases. I also offer email subscription to my press releases so that whenever I publish one it’s immediately sent out to interested parties.

That’s a great tip Danny, I hadn’t really considered company newsletters or email subscriptions - I’ll add RSS feed from the company website as well, though ideally your site is setup to do that automatically anyhow.
Simon - right on as well … the newswires claim effectiveness, but I think their biggest value is injecting it into the search engines super fast - things like Google / Yahoo news etc. Though blogs are quickly being able to take that advantage away as well.
A good targeted email list really can’t be beat - except by individually pitching each reporter individually
